What is Legal Aid?
The government provide funding for Legal Aid to those who cannot afford to pay for the costs of legal advice. Legal Aid is in place to protect your basic rights and help you have a chance at a fair hearing.
Can I get Legal Aid?
If you cannot afford your legal costs, you can apply for legal aid. Whether you are eligible for Legal Aid will be dependent on:
YOUR MEANS:
• Your disposable (spare) income and how much disposable capital (money, property) you have
THE MERITS OF YOUR CASE:
• the type of offence you have been summoned or charged for, and
• whether there is a reasonable chance of winning your case and whether it is worth the time and money needed to win.
How do I find out whether I am eligible for Legal Aid?
